Government polytechnic Rajkot was established in the month of June 1964 by the government of Gujarat with an initial intake of 60 students in  the civil engineering Diploma Course. This Polytechnic initially located at Dharampur Utara Rajkot. The new and fully equipped building for the Polytechnic was constructed later in the Year 1966, on a hillock near Aji Dam, a green lush surrounding ideal for the academics. This place is about 6Km. away from the Railway station.

Rajkot is a well-known industrial city of Gujarat state.Rajkot is famous for its diesel Engine industries in all over the India. It is situated on Bombay-Okha broad gauge line of western Railway and 8B national highway. Leading industries of the city are Field Marshal, K.Rasiklal & Co., Echjay Steel, Forge & Forge Pvt. Ltd. and developing industrial zone of ,Lodhika, Metoda and Shaper which are recognized for backward industrial area by Gujarat industrial Development Corporation which gives high potentiality of Industrial growth.
